Daniel Island Beresford Creek Bridge: Jan. 23 Update
Press Release from the City of Charleston:
The Beresford Creek Bridge remains closed at this time while the city awaits delivery of a special-order two-inch thick steel plate. The plate was recommended by engineers at JMT Inc. after a routine inspection last week found deterioration to one of the beams at the southern end of the bridge.
Interim Public Services Director Tom O’Brien said, “Our supplier has assured us that we are still on track for delivery of the steel plate by the end of the week. As soon as we have the plate here in the city, we plan to begin installation immediately.”
Once the steel plate is installed, the bridge will reopen to non-truck traffic.
In the meantime, the City’s Department of Traffic and Transportation has produced and installed the necessary signage for the new truck restrictions.
Charleston Police Chief Luther Reynolds said, “We’re continuing to monitor traffic at peak times, and stand ready to assist as needed. Our officers will remain on duty in the area until repairs have been completed.”
