Local Stars Dance and Compete for the Mirror Ball Trophy in Alzheimer’s Family Support Services Fundraiser

The 9th annual “Dancing with The ARK’s Stars” pairs local celebrities with professional dancers in a competition that has become a widely attended annual event. This year’s competition is at 7 pm on Saturday, March 9th at Eidson Gym, Pinewood Preparatory School in Summerville.

A county treasurer, a real estate broker-in-charge, and fire and rescue chief of operations, are among the local personalities trading their day jobs for dancing shoes to raise money for The ARK, Alzheimer’s Family Support Services.

“This is an essential fundraiser that enables us to help even more families as they care for loved ones living with Alzheimer’s or related dementia,” Peg Lahmeyer, executive director of The ARK, said. “The biggest winners of the night will ultimately be the families we serve.”

Tickets are $65 in advance and $75 at the door. The evening includes heavy hors d’oeuvres, an open bar, and a silent auction. Tickets can be purchased online at TheARKofSC.org or by calling 843-471-1360.

Proceeds from this premier fundraiser support the many programs of The ARK as it provides essential services for families dealing with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia. Serving five counties: Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, Dorchester and Orangeburg. The ARK offers respite care, support groups, caregiver consultation, caregiver education workshops, resource referrals, law enforcement and first responders training, community learning programs, and rural services development.

Each dancer is paired with a professional dance partner from Ballroom Dance Charleston, SC (USA Dance Chapter 6021). The dancing duos will perform at the event for a chance to win one of two titles: the Judge’s Award or the People’s Choice Award voted on by the audience.

The 2019 celebrity dancers are:

  • Lateefah Cusack, project manager, Latitude 36
  • Cindy Chitty, treasurer, Dorchester County
  • Corey Greene, financial representative, Modern Woodmen of America
  • Steven Jackson, general manager Charleston, NW White & Company
  • Chief Jake Jenkins, assistant chief of operations, Summerville Fire and Rescue
  • Carrie Lutes, vice president of operations, Lutes Property Services Company
  • Bill Marshall, executive vice president for sales and marketing, Architrave LLC
  • Jackie Tucker, broker-in-charge, Carolina One Real Estate – Charleston

Similar to the hit TV show Dancing with the Stars, four couples will dance in each round, with the two couples receiving the most judges’ votes competing in a “dance off” to win the judge’s award. The couple receiving the most votes by dollars wins the Mirror Ball trophy. Votes are $10 each, and can be cast in advance at TheARKofSC.org or at the event.

The 2018 Dancing with The ARK’s Stars raised more than $102,000. Nearly 450 people came out to watch local celebrities pair with professional dancers for an evening of dancing, socialization, and a silent auction.
