USS CHARLESTON (LCS 18) Commissioning Ceremony Details Announced

At a press conference Monday morning, Mayor John Tecklenburg joined the USS CHARLESTON (LCS 18) Commissioning Committee to announce the commissioning ceremony for Charleston’s sixth namesake ship – an Independence-class littoral combat ship – set to take place at 10 am on Saturday, March 2nd, 2019 at the Columbus Street Terminal, located at 30 Johnson Street.

Mayor Tecklenburg was also joined at the press conference by former Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr., USS CHARLESTON (LCS 18) Commissioning Committee Chair and Navy League Charleston President Patrick Keaveny, Joint Base Charleston representatives, and Air Force Junior ROTC members.

Those interested in attending the commissioning ceremony must register for event tickets in advance at https://www.navyleaguecharleston.org/uss-charleston-invitation. Individual registration is required for each ticket desired and will remain open through 11:59 pm on Thursday, February 14th, 2019.

Mayor Tecklenburg said, “The commissioning of the USS CHARLESTON is a great honor for our city, and further strengthens our deep and abiding connection to the United States Navy. I urge all who are interested in experiencing this historic moment to join me and the USS CHARLESTON crew at her upcoming commissioning ceremony.”

Keaveny said, “Commissioning ceremonies are rooted in centuries of naval history and tradition. It has been a pleasure to lead the USS CHARLESTON Commissioning Committee and to work with members of our armed forces as we bring Charleston’s sixth namesake ship into active duty.”
