Gov. McMaster & Mayor Tecklenburg Tour President Street Stormwater Tunnel

Published

on

Today, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster and Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg led a delegation of South Carolina Floodwater Commission members, including Commission Chairman Thomas S. Mulliken, on a tour of the President Street stormwater tunnel, one of two tunnels built as part of the Spring Fishburne Drainage Improvement Project.

The President Street tunnel, which is 8 feet in diameter, is located 140 feet underground and is accessed through a drop shaft installed at Harmon Field near President Street.

When completed, the Spring Fishburne Drainage Improvement Project’s tunnel system will stretch more than a mile and a half underground and send stormwater to a new pump station capable of emptying 360,000 gallons per minute into the Ashley River at high tide.
