Georgia Southern scored four runs in the sixth inning, and held the College of Charleston baseball team to three hits in an 8-0 decision on Tuesday evening at Patriots Point.
Georgia Southern (3-4) pushed across eight runs on 10 hits, including a pair for extra bags, while holding College of Charleston (6-2) scoreless on three singles. The Eagles converted 5-of-11 opportunities with a runner in scoring position, and prevented the Cougars from advancing past first base.
Dupree Hart (Rock Hill, S.C.), Joey Mundy (Huntington, W.Va.), and Harrison Hawkins (Bishopville, S.C.) each collected a base hit for the Cougars. AaronAdams (Lexington, S.C.) made his collegiate debut as a seventh-inning pinch-hitter, and stayed in the game in left field.
Trent Joiner (Huntersville, N.C.) made his first start as a Cougar and pitched into the fourth, striking out two while not allowing a run on one hit and three walks. Tradd James (Sumter, S.C.) tossed two shutout innings with one strikeout; Josh Price (Dillion, S.C.) suffered his first loss at The College after surrendering three earned runs on two hits in one-third of an inning.
Noah Hinzman (Greenwood, S.C.) and Kris Kuhn (Summerville, S.C.) combined to allow two runs on three hits in one and two-thirds. Trey Fields (Kingsport,Tenn.) pitched the final two innings in his collegiate debut, allowing two runs on two hits and striking out two.
Steven Curry reached four times, scored twice, and drove in two runs to pace the Eagle offense, as Nolan Tressler plated three with a 2-for-3 night after entering as a pinch-hitter. Austin Thompson clubbed a two-run homer in the seventh.
Tyler Owens struck out seven over seven shutout innings to earn the win in his first appearance of the season. Aiden McAllister and Braxton Johns combined for three strikeouts over the final two innings.
The Cougars return to the diamond on Wednesday afternoon when they host in-state rival and No. 11 (Collegiate Baseball) Coastal Carolina. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m. at Patriots Point.
