Charleston Chosen as The South’s Best City of 2019

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before – the Holy City has won some awards. Charleston notched a couple honors in Southern Living’s “The South’s Best” awards. After over 65,000 surveys were reviewed by the magazine, Charleston emerged as the top dog in two categories – including, “The South’s Best City of 2019.” It’s the third straight year the Holy City has won the award.

“Even people who have never set foot in this dreamy Lowcountry city have romantic notions about it,’ Southern Living wrote about Charleston. Writer Caroline Rogers said, “I had high expectations when I set my sights on Charleston for the first time. A place doesn’t win the title of South’s Best City three years in a row without a gift for hospitality and plenty of charm. The city brims with both—that’s evident—but there’s more. Charleston is home to hundreds of years of history and is still constantly reinventing itself.”

In addition to the “Best City” honor, Charleston was also voted as the South’s Best Food City. “Friends don’t let friends eat at chain restaurants in Charleston,” Betsy Cribb wrote. “When you’re in Charleston, the Holy (Smokes! This Place Has a Lot of Restaurants) City, choosing chains over exploring the local flavor is a transgression as unforgivable as slurping oysters out of season.”
