The Cooper River Bridge Run released the following statement regarding the death of Julian Smith, the event’s longtime director:

“It is with a very heavy heart that we announce the passing of Julian Smith on March 22, 2019.

Julian was the force that made the Cooper River Bridge Run what it is today, but beyond that was one of the most beloved people in the Charleston community.

He will forever be remembered as we honor his legacy at this year’s Cooper River Bridge Run and every race to come.

In this difficult time, we kindly ask the public and media to respect the family’s privacy, as well as the Cooper River Bridge Run staff. Arrangements will be made by James A. McAlister Funeral Home.”
