Local Company to Host Charleston Poetry Tours in April
If you live in the Holy City, you’ve likely taken one of the numerous educational tours of the peninsula and may think you know all there is to know about Charleston. For those jaded types, a local tour company is offering a new kind of adventure – Poetry Tours of Charleston.
Charleston Cavalier Tours will present the new limited-time series in April with four local poets. Attendees will hear poems from past Charlestonians, learn about the verses they read, as well as listen to modern poetry about the Holy City’s life and culture. In addition, each poet will share some of their work created in a response to the historical research of the tour. A licensed guide and a local poet will lead this 1.5-hour walking tour starting at 9 am by the William Gilmore Simms memorial in White Point Gardens at the Battery.
Participating local poets include Derek Berry, Carlos Johnson, Joey Tucker, and Christine Washington.
In honor of National Poetry Month, a portion of the proceeds of each tour will go to support the Free Verse Festival, the Speak Freely Foundation, and the Queens of Poetry.
