Press Release

You may be asking yourself, what do a chef and a maestro have in common? Plenty! Like an orchestral conductor, a chef must orchestrate the kitchen, plan the repertoire, control the timing, and create an amazing and moving product while keeping their guests coming back for more! And, when you add in some Stravinsky, Dvorak, Ellington, music from the Silver Screen, and selections from jazz trumpet player Charlton Singleton…you have a recipe for success!

Now is your chance to cast a vote to turn your favorite Charleston chef into a maestro! From March 26th to May 17th, four local chefs – Nathalie Dupree, Charleston’s favorite cookbook author; Mike Lata, Chef/Partner at FIG Restaurant; Michelle Weaver, Executive Chef at Charleston Grill; and Anthony DiBernardo, Owner/Pitmaster at Swig & Swine; will compete for the opportunity to conduct at the Charleston Symphony Sunset Serenade concert on Friday, May 24th at 8 pm. This free concert sponsored by the City of Charleston, kicks-off the Piccolo Spoleto Festival.

The winning contestant will conduct one piece on the U.S. Custom House steps at East Bay Street. But have no fear, Principal Pops Conductor Yuriy Bekker will be on hand to conduct as well as to offer some coaching tips to the winning maestro. In addition to Yuriy, the concert will feature selections led by Assistant Conductor and Charleston Symphony Youth Orchestra Conductor Kellen Gray.

YOU SELECT THE WINNER! You can pick the winner by voting for your favorite chef online at www.csolinc.org/pursuit-of-the-podium, at a Charleston Symphony Concert at the Gaillard, or the Symphony Designer Showhouse (16 Rutledge Avenue through April 28. Votes are $5 each. You may vote as often as you like between March 26th and May 17th. The winner will be announced May 20th.

Every vote benefits the Charleston Symphony and CSOL music scholarships
