The Speak Freely Foundation Hosts Its 2nd Annual Poetry Festival

The Speak Freely Foundation (SFF) presents its second poetry festival on April 11th to 13th in North Charleston, in honor of National Poetry Month. The 2019 Speak Freely Foundation Poetry Festival is purposed to raise awareness about poetry’s importance to the arts and youth.

Studies have shown that fine arts are therapeutic, and through exposing children to the art of poetry, they will have an outlet that encourages them to express themselves through the three Rs (Reading, wRiting and Reciting).

Last year, more than 100 community members attended the first poetry festival. The festival will kick off on Thursday evening with The Poetry Show, an open mic experience where adults can express their talent through poetry and other vocal art forms. Friday evening will be Popcorn and Poetry with a showing of poetic movies and popcorn bar. The festival will end with Speak Freely Saturday to include live expression of poetry and other art forms, a poetry corner that will allow attendees to participate in writing and performing their own poetry, vendors, and more. All ages are encouraged to attend on Saturday.

Ticket donations can be made through Eventbrite under the Speak Freely Foundation or 2019 Speak Freely Foundation Poetry Festival. Specific times and locations for festival events can be found on the Speak Freely Foundation Facebook page and Eventbrite page. The organization is still accepting sponsors and vendors for the poetry festival.

Founded in 2007 by Carlos Johnson, the Speak Freely Foundation (SFF) is a non-profit organization that focuses on stimulating positivity in youth by mentorship through poetry and boxing. SFF’s goal is to help youth resist unhealthy temptations in their communities and provide them with an opportunity to discover their potential and tap into their creative abilities. Its two signature programs are the S.L.A.M. Poetry Workshop and the Science of Boxing Class, which both serve as therapeutic stress relievers that provide personal growth and healing. The organization teaches structure and balance while instilling confidence and self-esteem in youth.
