Patriots Point to Host “All About Flight: Talking Birds and Planes” An Event Inspired By Earth Day
Patriots Point Naval & Maritime will host a special event for families inspired by Earth Day titled, “All About Flight: Talking Birds and Planes,” on Sunday, April 14th from 10 am until 2 pm. Activities will be included in the standard price of museum admission. As always, kids under the age of six are free.
Activates related to “All About Flight: Talking Birds and Planes” will begin at 10 am. Charleston business Wild Birds Unlimited and Vietnam veteran and helicopter pilot Graves Wilson will discuss flight and compare flight characteristics between birds and man-made aircraft. Families will also learn about various seabirds indigenous to Charleston and have an opportunity to participate in a bird watch on the USS Yorktown’s flight deck and museum piers. Especially with the new bird feeders placed on the deck, you never know what kind of birds you might see!
Below is the schedule:
- 10 am – Event Starts in the Smokey Stover Theater
- 11 am – Birding at Patriots Point with Wild Birds Unlimited
- 12 pm – Flight Discussion With Wild Birds Unlimited and Vietnam War Pilot
- 1 pm – Birding at Patriots Point with Wild Birds Unlimited
“This is a great opportunity for our guests to learn about the bird community from local experts,” Hannah Giddens, Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum’s science program coordinator, said. “In addition to the 28 different aircraft we have on display at the museum, guests always spot seabirds and other Charleston marine life while on our ships and piers. We want our visitors to experience the connection between that natural world and its applications to our human world.”
