Take Steps For Crohn’s & Colitis on April 28th
On Sunday, April 28th, the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation’s (CFF) Charleston Take Steps Walk will be held at Wannamaker Park starting at 1 pm. Take Steps is a family-friendly community celebration dedicated to raising mission critical funds and awareness of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, two painful, debilitating digestive diseases that affect 1 in 200 Americans, including 80,000 children nationwide.
“Today, these digestive diseases can be treated, but not cured,” Paulette Purnell, Community Manager, said. “That’s why the Crohns & Colitis Foundation invests in research toward a cure and better quality of life.”
This year Nick Zapkowski will be the Honored Hero. Nick was diagnosed with Chron’s disease in July 2015 at just 11-years-old. He has experienced extreme weight loss, diet changes, and countless trips to the doctor’s office. Nick says that his parents and staff at MUSC GI have been a great support for him and he has a great doctor caring for him. He has a huge family and friend support system as well.
Thousands of people will gather this year at more than 100 walk sites in local communities across the country. Take Steps Charleston has raised over $60,000 for research and patient support services and has set a goal to raise $20,000 in 2019.
Funds raised through Take Steps will directly impact vital treatment, research, and life-giving patient programs for 3.1 million Americans who live with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. The walks are family-friendly festivals dedicated to patients and their families and serves as a celebration for all the hard work and dedication of the community. Participants connect with other patients, families, and caregivers throughout the community, creating a web of support for IBD patients in the local area.

About Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis
Known collectively as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis affects 1 in 200 people. They are painful, medically incurable diseases that attack the digestive system. Crohn’s disease may attack anywhere along the digestive tract, while ulcerative colitis inflames only the large intestine (colon). Symptoms may include abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea, rectal bleeding, fever and weight loss. Many patients require numerous hospitalizations and surgery.
