Lucas, Graham Key Cougars to Series-Clinching Win at Northeastern

Junior center fielder Chris Graham (Leland, N.C.) connected on his first home run as a Cougar, and Brooks Lucas (Greenville, S.C.) struck out five in seven strong innings to lead the College of Charleston baseball team to a 7-1 win over Northeastern University on Sunday afternoon to clinch a Colonial Athletic Association series victory.
With the win, College of Charleston (26-14, 9-3 CAA) widens the gap for second in the CAA standings over third-place Northeastern (18-21, 8-7 CAA) at the midway point of the Cougars’ conference calendar. Charleston plated seven runs on eight hits and seven walks, while holding the Huskies to one run on five base knocks.
Graham went 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored, and his first home run of the season – a two-run shot in the sixth. Clay Hunt (Fort Mill, S.C.) collected two hits and drove in one, as Danny Wondrack (Wall, N.J.) and Chaz Davey (North Augusta, S.C.) each plated one run. Dupree Hart (Rock Hill, S.C.) stole his 32nd base of the season, and the 67th of his career to move into a tie for fourth on the program’s all-time list.
Lucas tossed a career-high seven innings to move to 4-1 on the season in his third start, allowing one run on four hits and striking out five. Josh Price(Dillion, S.C.) pitched two scoreless frames in relief with back-to-back strikeouts to start the ninth.
Jake Farrell collected two of Northeastern’s five hits with a single and a double, while Scott Holzwasser drove in Cam Walsh with a third-inning base knock. Kyle Murphy surrendered five runs on six hits and five walks in five and one-third innings to take the loss. Sam Jacobsak allowed two unearned runs over two frames, while Brandon Dufault tossed one and two-thirds scoreless innings.
Charleston returns to the diamond on Wednesday when the Cougars travel to Statesboro, Ga. for the final of three meetings in the season series with Georgia Southern. First pitchis set for 6:00 p.m.
