Nation’s Largest One-Day Food Drive is Saturday

Published

on

On Saturday, May 11th, the National Association of Letter Carriers hosts their 27th Annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive. This is the nation’s largest one-day food drive and the public is encouraged to participate by placing non-perishable food items in or near their mailboxes.

All food donations in our area will be delivered to the Lowcountry Food Bank (LCFB) where they will then be distributed to a network of soup kitchens, food pantries, shelters, and other partners in our community.

On Saturday, more than 100 Lowcountry Food Bank staff and volunteers will be on hand at each local post office throughout the Charleston area to meet the 427 letter carriers bringing in food throughout the day from their daily routes. Volunteers will be at post offices across the area to offload and sort food donations from the tri-county area. The Lowcountry Food Bank anticipates that this year’s Stamp Out Hunger will collect more than 115,000 pounds of food that will be distributed back into the community for those who are food insecure.

Food Lion has already donated 26,000 meals and the bags that carriers will leave in household mailboxes for individuals to fill with non-perishable food.

If a household does not receive a bag in their mailbox, they can leave shelf-stable food at their door and their letter carrier will pick it up. If your home has a community mailbox bank, donations may be left there.

In 2018, Stamp Out Hunger collected 115,756 pounds of food for the tri-county area, which created 96,465 meals for food insecure children, seniors, and families. As the corporate sponsor for the food drive, Food Lion has provided a donation of 26,000 meals and donation bags for postal carriers to distribute to household mailboxes in the days before the event. The bags filled with food donations will then be collected on May 11 by the National Association of Letter Carriers and delivered to the Lowcountry Food Bank to be sorted and distributed back to our community.
