Cougars Outlast Blue Hens in 16th-Inning Marathon 10-7

NEWARK, Del. — Danny Wondrack (Wall, N.J.) launched a game-tying home run with two outs in the ninth and Luke Manzo (Marietta, Ga.) drove in the winning run with a two-run triple in the top of the 16thto lead College of Charleston to a 10-7 win over Delaware in a 16-inning marathon on Thursday evening.
With the victory, College of Charleston (34-19, 14-8 CAA) extends its win streak to six games and clinches a first-round bye in next week’s Colonial Athletic Association Championship as the No. 2 seed. The win also marks the Cougars’ fourth straight comeback victory and 20th of the season. Charleston rallied from a pair of deficits in the victory, including a first-inning 5-0 shortfall.
Manzo delivered a pair of key hits with an RBI single in the Cougars’ five-run second in addition to his game-winning two-run triple in the 16th. Wondrack reached base five times and sent the game to extra innings with his CAA-leading 14th homer of the season in the ninth. Dupree Hart (Rock Hill, S.C.) and Bradley Dixon (Greenwood, S.C.) each collected two hits and drove in two runs. Hart also swiped two bases to pull into a tie for second on the program’s single-season list with 38 thefts. Chris Graham (Leland, N.C.) went 3-for-7 with two RBI’s and Logan McRae (Florence, S.C.) reached four times with two hits and two walks.
Josh Price (Dillion, S.C.) struck out two and scattered four hits across six superb innings in relief of starter Tradd James (Sumter, S.C.). Nathan Ocker (Middletown, Pa.) fanned six in two and two-thirds scoreless frames as Brooks Lucas (Greenville, S.C.) struck out four in three shutout innings to earn the win.
Zach Miller went 3-for-7 with four RBI’s and a first-inning three-run homer to lead the way for Delaware. Erik Bowren hit a two-run home run in the first as Kevin Mohollen and Vinny Vaccone each collected three hits.
Brandon Walter lasted eight innings for the Blue Hens, allowing seven runs on 10 hits and striking out five. Derek Wakeley tossed five and one-third shutout innings with five strikeouts in relief; Joey Haass surrendered three runs – one earned – on three hits in two frames to take the loss.
Charleston returns to the diamond on Friday evening in game two of the series with the Blue Hens. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.
