Press Release

Charleston Promise Neighborhood (CPN) knows that children learn best when they do, in addition to see and hear, and as such, has arranged for engineers from the Savannah River Site, located outside of Aiken, to come to our area to lead a series of hands-on science projects with students attending two underserved/high potential elementary schools.

The employee volunteers of Savannah River Site, a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) project, will share their STEM expertise in entertaining ways with students on Thursday, May 30th.  Projects will begin at Mary Ford Elementary School in North Charleston at 9 am, and at Sanders-Clyde Elementary School in Charleston at 12 pm.

The programs at both schools will include science-based projects, such as “Solving a Mystery,” “Flight and Rocketry,” “Let’s Build a Gumdrop Dome,” “Properties of Strange Liquids,” and will include an “Ecology Lab Live Animal” presentation.  All projects will present scientific principles in an engaging way to make learning STEM fun for these elementary school students.

“We are so excited for the Savannah River Site Science Day and can’t wait to see the joy on our students’ faces,” said Sherrie Snipes-Williams, chief executive officer of Charleston Promise Neighborhood.

Both elementary schools reside in the Charleston Promise Neighborhood, a community that has been plagued by a lack of equitable opportunities in education, employment, and housing for generations.

The DOE and Charleston Promise Neighborhood have a history of collaborating to promote greater educational opportunities and outcomes for young scholars in the Title One elementary schools in Charleston and North Charleston.  DOE has funded STEM education as part of CPN’s Expanded Learning Time after-school program.
