Personal Update

For those that don’t follow me on Twitter, I wanted to share a recent post I made.

Some may know that I like to share news and info about mental health. There are many things that need to be fixed in regards to mental health, but much of it starts with honesty and education.

I’ve shared my belief that ending the stigma of mental illness involves people being unafraid to share their personal struggles. Despite advocating for others to be truthful, I have failed to do so myself.

I’ve had no problem sharing that I have a social anxiety disorder, but I’ve been ashamed to admit my struggles with alcohol. I’m disappointed to say that the stigma of addiction is part of the reason – with selfishness and denial being the others.

Without the support and love of people I honestly don’t deserve, I wouldn’t be sharing this tonight. I owe them something I can never repay. I’ve lost people I love because of my unwillingness to be truthful with them, my friends, my family, and myself.

I understand that posting about this publicly helps with my stigma and denial issues, but not my selfishness. Sharing this is selfish in some ways. It will make me feel better, people will offer support and kind words, and it’ll (hopefully) keep me honest.

Being sober has improved my life immensely & I want to keep it that way. I recently had to start this journey over & this was one step I needed to make. I refused to do this in the past, and I’m thankful to the person who opened my eyes and has helped me more than I deserved.

Thanks for reading.
