Call for Entries: Garden & Gun’s 10th Annual Made in the South Awards

Garden & Gun recently announced the kickoff of its tenth annual Made in the South Awards with the official call for product entries in six categories: Food, Drink, Home, Style, Crafts, and Outdoors. The overall winner will receive a $10,000 cash prize and will be prominently featured alongside the other category winners and runners-up in the magazine’s December 2019/January 2020 issue.

Garden & Gun created the Made in the South Awards in 2010 to celebrate and encourage Southern craftsmanship, and to recognize the best available Southern-made products.

“Every year of the Made in the South Awards has been special, but I have a feeling our 10th will be the best yet,” David DiBenedetto, senior vice president and editor in chief of Garden & Gun, said. “Not only will we be celebrating some of our favorite past winners but also discovering a new crop of talented artisans, craftsmen, chefs, designers, and tastemakers.”

The 2019 Made in the South Awards judges are:

• Carla Hall (Washington, D.C.), classically trained chef, cookbook author, and culinary personality, competing on Bravo’s Top Chef and Top Chef: All Stars and acting as cohost of ABC’s former Emmy Award–winning lifestyle television show The Chew. (Food)
• Rob Samuels (Louisville, KY), an eighth-generation whiskey maker and the current chief operating officer of Maker’s Mark. Samuels introduced a cask strength expression for both Maker’s Mark and Maker’s 46 and launched Maker’s Mark Private Select. He also serves as chairman of the board for the Kentucky Distillers’ Association.(Drink)
• Dara Caponigro (New York, NY), creative director at F. Schumacher & Co., the 130-year-old American company that encompasses both Schumacher, the luxury fabric house and wall-covering house, and Patterson Flynn Martin, the prestigious rug firm. Caponigro was also a founding editor at Domino, where she coauthored domino: The Book of Decorating, a New York Times bestseller. (Home)
• Laura Vinroot Poole( Charlotte, NC), founder of Capitol, a luxury clothing boutique in Charlotte, North Carolina that features designer fashions along with high-end jewelry and accessories. She also owns brother and sister stores Tabor and Poole Shop and recently opened an L.A. outpost of Capitol. (Style)
• Erin and Ben Napier (Laurel, MS), stars of HGTV’s Home Town—the hit home renovation series based in Laurel, Mississippi. The couple also founded businesses Laurel Mercantile Co., where they design, manufacture, and sell heirloom-quality, U.S.-made goods from candles to duck calls to cast-iron skillets; and Scotsman Co., Ben’s woodshop, where he builds one-of-a-kind fine furnishings. (Crafts)
• T. Edward Nickens (Raleigh, NC), an expert sportsman and the author of a collection of outdoor guides, including The Total Outdoorsman Manual, T. Edward Nickens puts his vast sporting knowledge to good use with his ninth appearance as a Made in the South Awards judge. (Outdoors)

All Southern artisans or businesses with a product in one of the six categories (Food, Drink, Home, Style, Crafts, and Outdoors) that will be available for sale through January 2020 may apply. For entry forms, category descriptions, and rules, visit madeinthesouthawards.com. The entry fee for submissions is $75, and entries will be accepted until midnight ET on July 1, 2019. Winners will be publicly announced in the December 2019/January 2020 issue of Garden & Gun, which will hit newsstands in November 2019.
