Press Release

PURE Theatre is proud and excited to announce the productions for their 17th season coming this August 2019 through May 2020.

Following their July Summer Slam Production of BECOMING DR. RUTH by Mark St. Germain (now playing until July 28th), PURE will officially kick off Season 17 in August with the world premiere of LAST RITES by Randy Neale, in which tensions rise as three people take refuge from the chaos of the 1967 Detroit Riots and consider the harsh nature of loss and the inevitable combustibility of their differences.

Following the season opener is CHOIR BOY by Tarrell Alvin McCraney, a five-time 2019 Tony Award-Nominee and two-time 2019 Tony Award-Winner. Playing at the Dock Street Theatre as part of the City of Charleston’s MOJA Arts Festival in early October 2019, CHOIR BOY is “the story of a young gay black man and a battle between identity and community” (Playbill Online). It will run alongside LAST RITES, returning for one night only on October 2 during the MOJA Festival. Then, closing out PURE’s 2019 productions in November, will be the regional premiere of the “rib-bustingly funny” THE LIFESPAN OF A FACT by Jeremy Kereken, David Murrell, and Gordon Farrell (Wall Street Journal).  THE LIFESPAN OF A FACT is a new comedy of conflict in which a determined, young fact checker and an unorthodox author take on the high stakes world of publishing.

In January 2020, PURE Theatre will bring a Co-World Premiere with Chicago’s Strawdog Theatre of WELCOME TO KEENE, NH by new playwright Brian James Polak. Boasting a dramatic structure mirroring that of Thornton Wilder’s OUR TOWN, WELCOME TO KEENE, NH asks us to consider what it means to be human in the world today.

March 2020 will see the regional premiere of the 2018 Tony Award-Nominee, Lucy Kirkwood’s THE CHILDREN, “an eco-thriller bristling with chills and suspense” (NYT)And rounding out the season from April to May 2020 is the 2019 Pulitzer Prize-Winner for Drama, the “unforgettable” (Time Out NY) FAIRVIEW by Jackie Sibblies Drury, a searing examination of families, drama, family dramas and the insidiousness of white supremacy.

Season subscriptions, tickets, and additional information about the productions are now available at www.puretheatre.org and at the PURE Theatre box office at 843-723-4444 Tuesday – Friday from 10am to 6pm and two hours prior to performances. Season subscriptions are $175 and tickets range from $10-$35. Advance purchases are strongly recommended. PURE Theatre is now located at the Cannon Street Arts Center at 134 Cannon Street.
