Charleston-based Photographers to Discuss New Books at the Music Hall
The Charleston Music Hall (CMH) is thrilled to present “The Year of The Dogs, Live” w/ Vincent J. Musi and special guest Callie Shell presenting “Hope, Never Fear: A Personal Portrait of the Obamas” on Wednesday, September 25th at 7 pm.
The CMH lecture series continues with this unique presentation of two new books by local power couple Vincent J. Musi and Callie Shell. These Charleston-based photographers will be speaking about their life, work, and new books. You can see a recent interview they did with “Quintin’s Close-ups” here.
Musi is a photographer for National Geographic who spent the last year taking photographs of dogs in his studio on Huger Street. The result is The Year of the Dogs; a book chronicling his work in the studio matched with witty ‘dogographies’ gleaned from his time spent with each subject. From a Labrador that likes opera to akleptomaniac miniature golden doodle, and a lovable one-eyed Jack Russell to a farting bulldog, Musi captures the unique character and personality of these everyday dogs with evocative images and a gently comic mash-up of his own life experiences that have captured the hearts of many on his wildly popular Instagram feed.
In 2004 Callie met a first-term Illinois State Senator named Barack Obama. The two struck up a friendship, and she began photographing him for Time Magazine. Her new book Hope, Never Fear presents a unique look behind the curtains following the journey from the Obama’s family home in Chicago to the most powerful house in our nation.

About The Year of the Dogs
As a National Geographic photographer, traveling the world to photograph lions, tigers and bears was a regular day’s work for Vince. All that changed when his son turned sixteen – he decided to try something different; to spend some quality time at home and open a hometown studio to photograph dogs.

About Vincent J. Musi
Vincent J. Musi’s work is familiar to many around the world through the pages of National Geographic magazine. Specializing in animal portraiture, Musi considers his subjects collaborators, rather than simply the topics of his photographs.

Callie Shell has worked as a photographer for CNN since 2015 and Time magazine since 2001. She first photographed Barack Obama in 2004 before he was elected to the United States Senate, following him into the White House as the forty-fourth president of the United States.
Shell documented the historic campaign, election, and presidency from a unique personal and private perspective. Her photographs have garnered many awards, including recognition from World Press Photo.
She previously served eight years as the official photographer for Vice President Al Gore during the Clinton administration and was a staff photographer at the Pittsburgh Press, USA Today, and the Tennessean. Her work has been published, exhibited, and collected in magazines, books, and galleries throughout the world.
