When it comes to fast food restaurants, whether it be burgers, chicken, tacos, or pizza, the ultimate fate of an eatery lies in the hands, and/or stomachs of the customer. While the big name chains emerged on the scene in the 1960’s and 70’s, newcomers have had to jockey for position in the fast food hierarchy. Many factors attribute to their success, with the two mainstays being quality (taste) and value (cost related to quality).

Greater Charleston is teeming with fast food, with pizza no exception. The behemoths have been here for decades, and introducing a new product especially a new model is extremely tricky. Over the past several years several new pizza concepts have popped up in the low country, some closing less than a year later, mainly due to quality and value.

All that aside, Blaze Pizza is hoping native Charlestonians and those relocating here from the north and mid-west will find their ‘Fast Fire’d’ pizza inviting. Based out of California with heavyweight backers such as NBA’s Lebron James, Blaze Pizza mirrors a growing trend of made on demand pizzas. Make your way down the assembly line, craft the pizza anyway you want it. A few minutes in the high heat oven and your personal pizza is delivered to your table.

With eight signature pizzas (all customizable) including the carnivore lovers Meat Eater (teeming with pepperoni & meatballs), and the vegans Veg Out, there is something for everyone at Blaze. Build your own pizza pie allows for eight different types of meat, as well as another eight types of cheeses. Want to create a personal pizza with turkey meatballs topped with goat or gorgonzola cheese, you’ll find in on the menu at Blaze.

Concerned about daily intake but still craving gourmet pizza, the Red Vine is ideal. Nicely layered with ovalini mozzarella (low fat creamy Italian cheese), cherry tomatoes, basil, parmesan, with an olive oil drizzle comes in at 660 calories. Heavenly and a tad bit healthier. Molto buona!, Italian for very good!

Aside from their upscale look, easy flowing assembly line, and quick turn around time, what sets Blaze apart is their commitment to daily fresh made (never frozen) dough, combined with fresh ingredients that contain on artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives. That sounds good, but it tastes even better.

You’ll find simple salads and dough knots among the selections, with cookies, brownies, and a s’more pie to satisfy the sweet tooth. Beverages include beer and wine listings, which incidentally go great with just about any creation you can concoct at Blaze. I sampled the Meat Eater and it was awesome! If you eat light many pizzas can serve two. And with all pizzas under $9, it’s easier to chew on.

Unique is most definitely on the menu at Blaze. Gluten free pizza crusts including cauliflower and keto (low carb) creations. Plenty of options for vegans. Suffering from fool allergies, aside from toasted almonds for select salads, Blaze avoids peanuts and tree nuts in all their operations. Plus when they say ‘get cheesy with it’ that means all of their dairy selections are boldly pasteurized. At Blaze they like to ‘think outside the typical pizza box’.

Located at 1701 Shoremeade Rd. in the all new Indigo Square complex off 17N in Mount Pleasant (midway between 526 and Towne Center) Blaze Pizza is ideally suited for establishing the brand east of the Cooper, where generation X, Y, & Z, as well as millennials embrace newer trends. If all goes well newer locations may pop up throughout the low country over the next few years.

While the west coast is gung-ho over the growing trend of custom and designer pizza, most made in minutes, Blaze is hoping the east coast will get fire’d’ up just as well. With signature offerings and BYO (build your own) pizzas Blaze is blazing new trails in fast food. Give them a try Charleston.
