South Carolina Aquarium Announces 2019-20 Holland Lifelong Learning Program Schedule

The South Carolina Aquarium kicks off the 2019-2020 Holland Lifelong Learning Program series on September 25th at 6 pm with “The Other TSA: Keeping Turtle Species Safe.”
The first of six educational lectures focused on conservation will take a look at a local organization that works to restore populations of some of the most critically endangered turtle species in the world. South Carolina Aquarium Senior Veterinarian Dr. Shane Boylan and Turtle Survival Alliance Lead Keeper Nathan Haislip will talk about how these organizations work together, both in the laboratory and abroad.
“I’ve been working with Turtle Survival Alliance for the past 18 years and the work they do with these rare and little-studied turtles is incredible,” Boylan said.
There are more than 300 species of turtles worldwide and Turtle Survival Alliance works with 20 of the top-25 most endangered turtle species.
Now it its fifth season, the Aquarium’s Holland Lifelong Learning Program is a series of lectures that address trending topics in conservation and reflect the Aquarium’s mission to connect people with water, wildlife and wild places. The series is underwritten by a generous gift from Mary and Mason Holland.
“The Holland Lifelong Learning Program is really popular because of its casual nature,” says Kendyll Collins, an educator at the Aquarium who oversees the program. “It’s entertaining, informative and very personal – these topics hit close to home.”
Other scheduled lectures for the 2019-2020 series include:
- Oct. 15: Life Through a Lens: An Evening with Wildlife Photographer Scott Snider (Dockery’s on Daniel Island)
- Nov. 21: Microplastics and Mega Problems: Pollution Solutions in the Lowcountry (South Carolina Aquarium)
- Jan. 2020: Wild Ideas: Learning from Nature to Solve Human Problems (College of Charleston)
- Feb. 11: Sex, Drugs and Seaslime: An Evening with Author Dr. Ellen Prager (South Carolina Aquarium)
- Mar. 27: Testing the Waters: A Comfortable Conversation about Climate Change (The American Theater)
