I created the “Leftovers” series to ensure I could share as much food and bev news as possible, so here’s the latest:

  1.  Every Tuesday night, Purlieu is now doing a Chicken Parm Night. Chef Jeff Williams has made Chicken Parmesan on Sunday nights for his family for years, and when he and Chef Zucker started discussing a great neighborhood option to add one night a week, they landed on this delicious dish. Their version (right) has two Parmesan panko breaded chicken breasts with prosciutto, whole basil leaves, yellow tomato marinara, mozzarella, and parmesan cheese, served over Parisian gnocchi.
  2. Pink Cactus is launching a new lunch special that will be available Tuesday through Friday from 11 am to 3 pm. During that time, diners can enjoy a $12 lunch plate that includes the guest’s choice of two tacos, beans, rice and choice of Agua Fresca, a traditional Mexican beverage.

Standout tacos include the cauliflower taco with papenteca sauce, the barbacoa taco with braised beef and arbol rojo, and the fish taco with the day’s local catch and mango – the menu offers a total of seven different varieties to choose from. Guests typically have their choice of two different Agua Frescas as well, including the recent Flor de Jamaica hibiscus agua fresca and the Agua de Mango with mango juice and chia seeds.

In addition, Pink Cactus is now hosting live music on their patio Thursday and Sunday nights from 6:30 to 9:30 pm. Guests can enjoy authentic Latin tunes from Hector Salazar and Gregory Guay of the band Caja de Cuerdas every week on Spring Street.
  3. On October 8th, Charleston Grill invites guests to discover unexpected wine styles from Bordeaux and Germany. While diners indulge in Executive Chef Michelle Weaver’s world-class menu, Advanced Sommelier Rick Rubel will be pouring complimentary tastings* from The Grill’s award-winning wine list. In addition, a Black Truffle Foie Gras Terrine with a Mönchhof Riesling Kabinett gelée will make its debut on the menu, which pairs perfectly with the featured wines.

*Complimentary tastings are available to those who purchase an entrée at Charleston Grill. Mention the event to your server and/or hostess. Reservations required.
  4. Wild Dunes Resort’s Coastal Provisions restaurant is partnering with Diplomatico Rum to host a special Tiki Time Cocktail Class on Saturday, October 12th from 2 pm – 4 pm.

For just $35/person, guests can enjoy an interactive demonstration and tasting of Hemingway Daiquiri, Jungle Bird & Rum Old Fashioned cocktails. For more information, visit https://www.destinationhotels.com/wild-dunes/events/tiki-cocktail-class.
  5. Basic Kitchen brings back their beloved wine dinners with an evening celebrating natural wine and Italian dishes on Wednesday, October 23. The BK team welcomes Nico Sciackitano from La Stoppa, a natural winery in Piacenza, Italy, dedicated to the indigenous varietals of the Emilia region of Italy, to Charleston for an educational and intimate wine-paired dinner.

Basic Kitchen chef Robin Hollis shares the kitchen with guest chef Evan Gaudreau of Renzo to create a four-course Italian menu fit for the La Stoppa wine selections.

The evening begins with an aperitivo in the garden, followed by a family-style meal. Tickets are $135 and include food, wine, tax, and gratuity and can be purchased at basickitchen.com/la-stoppa.
  6. Join The Gadsden for the latest edition of its 2019 Field Notes lecture series, a behind-the-scenes look at what makes Charleston such a vibrant place to live. Field Notes is a recurring series featuring gifted local tastemakers who offer behind-the-scenes glimpses of Charleston.

This month, they are highlighting Vertical Roots, a company innovating a more powerful and efficient way of farming through state-of-the-art technologies. In doing this, they are engaging a new generation of farmers and providing them with sustainable jobs.

On Monday, October 7th, Field Notes will host Stefanie Swackhamer, the vice president of Mission, Marketing, and Business Development at AmplifiedAg. AmplifiedAg is the parent company to a diverse set of companies included Tiger Corner Farms, Boxcar Central, and Vertical Roots. This is a community event that is open to the public. The event is $5 and includes light bites (using Vertical Roots lettuce) and beer and wine. All ticket proceeds will be donated to Turning Leaf Project.

Doors open at 5:30 pm and the Vertical Roots team will take the stage soon after 6 pm The Gadsden is located at 5 Gadsdenboro Street in downtown Charleston (on Gadsdenboro Park). Tickets found here.
  7. Inspired by countless Hawaiian surf sessions filled with post-surf poke bowls, Mex 1 is introducing their ahi tuna poke bowl to the specials menu on October 10th at all 3 locations.
