The South Carolina Historical Society Museum is housed in the famed Fireproof Building, a National Historic Landmark designed by Washington Monument architect Robert Mills and constructed between 1822 and 1827. The museum features six galleries that explore the lives of individuals and provide a personal glimpse into South Carolina’s past. The displays include artifacts from the society’s collections— from an illustrated plat dated 1680 to Francis Marion’s powder horn and the 1851 edition of The Carolina Housewife.
The South Carolina Historical Society (SCHS) is the state’s oldest and largest private repository of documents, books, manuscripts and maps about South Carolina history. Founded in 1855, the SCHS is a non-profit organization with the mission to expand, preserve and make accessible its collection, and to encourage interest and pride in the rich historical legacy of South Carolina.
