Press Release

South Carolina-based Women’s Rights and Empowerment Network (WREN) is partnering with the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC), out of Washington, D.C., to bring nationally known social movement leaders to Charleston for an inaugural forum on gender equity on Saturday, December 7th.

The forum’s keynote session will include a “fireside chat” among three national activists: National Women’s Law Center’s President and CEO, Fatima Goss Graves; Black Lives Matter Co-Founder, Alicia Garza; and Campaign Zero Co-Founder and member of Ferguson Uprising, Brittany Packnett.

The goal of the groundbreaking forum is to highlight the power that women and gender-expansive people have to shape their future in South Carolina and across the country.

“WREN is honored to host this one-of-a-kind event with such empowering national and local organizations,” WREN CEO Ann Warner said. “The goal of this event is to unite and inspire, reinforcing the sense of community and responsibility necessary to the fight for gender equity.”

Other nonprofits and activist organizations with Lowcountry ties are partnering with the event, including Black Women 2020; Charleston Black Pride; EveryBlackGirl, Inc.; People Against Rape; YWCA of Greater Charleston; Transformative Teaching Collective; and We Are Family.

“I’m honored to be a part of this discussion,” National Women’s Law Center CEO Fatima Goss Graves said. “With the current socio-political landscape and its implications, effects, and barriers for reaching true gender equity, this conversation is more relevant today than ever. We hope to inspire grassroots activists to continue making a positive impact on their communities, starting right here in Charleston.”
