Nestled in a lush, 20,000-acre coastal nature preserve between Hilton Head Island and Savannah, Montage Palmetto Bluff, welcomes a new sustainability representative, Lucky the Dolphin, furthering the mission for continued conservation and preservation for the historic land that is home to Palmetto Bluff. Alongside a recent partnership with the University of South Carolina at Beaufort (USC Beaufort) – proudly supporting the Dolphin Research Program – Montage Palmetto Bluff strives to make a bigger difference in protecting its surrounding natural life and providing the ultimate destination for ecotourism.

As The Palmetto Bluff Conservancy are the caretakers of the ecological and environmental integrity of the honored land, Montage Palmetto Bluff is upholding its responsibility as a partner to the Conservancy, to remain resource efficient and eco-conscious through day-today operations – including water conservation through laundry practices and offering only paper straws and to-go boxes at all nine of the property’s dining outlets, in efforts to reduce plastic waste that makes its way back into our waters.

Boasting 32 miles of riverfront — featuring the May, Cooper and New Rivers — the maze of waterways provides a safe haven for the Atlantic Bottlenose dolphin. As Palmetto Bluff is known for regular dolphin pod sightings, one dolphin in particular stands out among the rest – sporting a unique notching pattern on her dorsal fin and known for her playful behavior. Her name is Lucky. Through the relationship between the Conservancy and USC Beaufort, Montage Palmetto Bluff was able to “adopt” Lucky, thus becoming the symbol for the sustainability program.

By partnering with Dr. Eric Montie and his team at USC Beaufort, Montage Palmetto Bluff will have a better understanding of the behaviors and needs of the Atlantic Bottlenose dolphin that are home to the vast tidal estuaries and rivers that make up the Lowcountry. Through the Lowcountry Dolphin Conservation program, not only will research offer insight into behavioral traits, but also ensure that the environment and ecosystem in which they live, will remain in proper balance for generations.

As the ideal destination for wellness, relaxing and active pursuits, Montage Palmetto Bluff is the ultimate outdoorsman’s paradise, offering one-of-a-kind experiences such as kayaking, paddle boarding, boating, biking and horseback riding, to name a few. But of all, the largest, living example of the property’s conservation efforts is the May River Golf Course. Recognized as a Jack Nicklaus Signature Course, the 18-hole May River Golf Course is a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, touting its variety of conservation efforts used in the development and maintenance of the course.
