Press Release

The Charleston Interreligious Council (CIC) in partnership with Charleston 350: A Celebration of Charleston’s 350th Anniversary, announces “A Gathering of Faiths in Charleston,” a presentation of the religious history of Charleston. The event will take place on Monday, December 30, 2019 at 6:30 pm at Seacoast Church, West Ashley Campus (2049 Savannah Highway).

All are welcome to participate in a multi-media event that will feature exhibitions by over 20 faith-based groups, a lecture on early Charleston religious history and an experience of “Watch Night,” a religious ritual started by enslaved persons in America awaiting the December 31, 1862 issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation.

Over 20 faith communities will set up booths offering a glimpse into their history – starting from the Native American traditions, to the search for religious freedom of the first settlers and ending with the current diverse representation of faith in Charleston. After exploring the exhibits, and eating a delicious meal, participants will hear from Charleston historian Damon Fordham about our city’s religious history. This presentation will be followed by a “Watch Night” service offered by Reverend Kylon Middleton and the Mt. Zion AME Choir. A light meal will be prepared by Gullah Geetchee Chef Charlotte Jenkins.

Sure to be an enriching experience, the Charleston Interreligous Council invites all of Charleston to attend and to learn about our shared history, kicking off a new month and a new year, in harmony.

This event is admission-free and open to the public. For more information on the CIC and Interfaith Harmony Month events, visit: www.CICouncil.org.

The Charleston Interreligious Council seeks to build bridges of understanding to promote sensitivity, tolerance, respect, and fellowship among religious groups in Charleston.
