Personal finance website WalletHub this week released its report on 2020’s Most & Least Educated States in America and South Carolina was listed as the 7th least educated in the country.

In order to determine where the most educated Americans live, WalletHub compared the 50 states across 18 key metrics. The data set ranges from share of adults aged 25 and older with at least a high school diploma to average university quality to gender gap in educational attainment.

How educated is South Carolina? (1=Most; 25=Avg.):

  • 36th – % of High-School Diploma Holders
  • 39th – % of Associate’s Degree Holders or College-Experienced Adults
  • 37th – % of Bachelor’s Degree Holders

  1. Former Teacher

Former teacher here… The absolute best way to increase academic performance in a child is to give them a high expectation for themselves. Almost without fail, the high performing students I taught were the ones who recognized the value of their education towards meeting their life goals. And the higher their life goals, the harder they tried. In a fourth grade class I taught, I took a moment to ask the students what they dreamed of being someday. Instead of lawyer, doctor, astronaut, or some other profession where academics are a necessity, the majority of students listed off professions like truck driver, McDonald’s worker, or even Walmart greeter. There is nothing wrong with making an honest living in whatever you do. But I believe those kids’ ceiling on their potential was established by their parents. As parents we must encourage kids to think big and believe that anything is possible and failure to reach for the stars is better than success at staying on the ground. In other words, as with almost anything we want to fix with society, it starts at home.
