Brookgreen Gardens Announces 2020 Reign of Rice Lecture Series

Brookgreen Gardens this week announced the featured speakers for the 2020 Reign of Rice Lecture Series. Over the next two months, the series will explore the theme, “Continuing Dynamics of Rice Heritage,” and discuss the complexity of the Gullah Geechee heritage through the production of rice.

“The Reign of Rice Lecture Series is important to us here at Brookgreen,” President and CEO of Brookgreen Gardens Page Kiniry said. “Through conservation and educational programming, we share the history of the region, including that of the Gullah Geechee people. Brookgreen strives to share with the public engaging information about the past, present and future of this vibrant culture.”

Here’s a look at the schedule:

Self Sufficiency with Steve Williams – February 15th

Historian, author and writer Steve Williams will discuss accomplishments made by descendants of enslaved members of Georgetown County, and the intertwined legacy of rice and slavery in the Lowcountry.

Pride with Alli Crandell and Eric Crawford – March 21st

Alli Crandell, M.S. and Eric Crawford, Ph.D. will discuss research by students of Coastal Carolina University’s Charles Joyner Institute for Gullah and African Diaspora Studies and the Athenaeum Press who have conducted field work with Gullah community members to create books, albums and exhibits.

Each presentation will take place at 1 pm in the Wall Lowcountry Center Complex and is free with garden admission. Seating must be reserved in advance. To reserve a seat, call 843-235-6049.
