Charleston Parks Conservancy Has Full Lineup of 2020 Park Events

With music, movies, and brunch events, there are plenty of ways to enjoy Charleston’s city parks this year. The Charleston Parks Conservancy is hosting a series of events in parks throughout downtown Charleston, James Island, and West Ashley.

Magnolia Music Series, Movie Night in the Park, and Sunday Brunch at Hampton Park offer a number of opportunities to explore a new park, soak up quality family time, or simply spend a ‘Sunday Funday’ listening to music over brunch.

MOVIE NIGHT IN THE PARK SERIES

Movie Night in the Park – “The Lion King”

5:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21

Magnolia Park and Community Garden, 720 Magnolia Road, Charleston, SC 29407

Enjoy games and activities before the showing of “The Lion King” at dark (approximately 6:10 p.m.). Food truck Area 51 will have food and drinks available for purchase. In this new version of “The Lion King,” a young lion returns to reclaim the throne that was stolen from him and his father by his treacherous and fratricidal uncle after spending his childhood in exile under the care of a friendly warthog and meerkat. Rated PG.

Movie Night in the Park – “Trolls”

6:30-9 p.m., Friday March 13

Medway Park, 2069 Medway Road, Charleston, SC 29412

Enjoy games and activities before the showing of “Trolls” at dark (approximately 7:27 p.m.). Food truck Street Bird will have food and drinks available for purchase. Rated PG, “Trolls” is the story of Poppy, the happiest Troll ever born, and the curmudgeonly Branch who set off on a journey to rescue Poppy’s friends and the Troll Village.

Movie Night in the Park – “Aladdin”

7-10 p.m. Friday, April 17

Lenevar Park, 1305 Lenevar Drive South, Charleston, SC 29407

Enjoy games and activities before the showing of “Aladdin” at dark (approximately 7:52 p.m.). Food truck Lola’s Lumpia will have food and drinks available for purchase. In “Aladdin,” a street rat pursues the princess of Agrabah with the help of a powerful genie who can grant him three wishes. His primary opponent is a malevolent sorcerer who serves as the city’s grand vizier and the chief adviser to the Sultan. Rated PG.

Movie Night in the Park – “A League of Their Own”

7-10 p.m. Friday, May 8

Deming Park, 1030 Fifth Ave., Charleston, SC 29407

Enjoy games and activities before the showing of “A League of Their Own” at dark (approximately 8:07 p.m.). Food truck Greekin’ Out will have food and drinks available for purchase. Rated PG, “A League of Their Own” is a look at the first women’s professional baseball league. It focuses on the rivalry between sisters on the same team, and their washed-up, hard-drinking coach.

Movie Night in the Park – “The Addams Family”

6-9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16

Tiedemann Park and Nature Center, 38 Elizabeth St. Charleston, SC 29403

Enjoy games and activities before the showing of “The Addams Family” at dark (approximately 6:53 p.m.). Food truck Roti Rolls will have food and drinks available for purchase. Dark hilarity ensues after the Addams family relocates to suburban New Jersey. In this PG animated film, their macabre traditions are promptly challenged by modern technology and their neighbors’ 21st century norms.

Movie Night in the Park – “Cool Runnings”

6:30-9:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11

Cool Blow Park, 10 Conroy St. Charleston, SC 29403

Enjoy games and activities before the showing of “Cool Runnings” at dark (approximately 7:31 p.m.). Food truck Pita Stroller will have food and drinks available for purchase. Rated PG, “Cool Runnings” is a fact-based tale about the course traveled by Jamaica’s bobsled team en route to the 1988 Olympics.

Movie Night in the Park – “Enchanted”

4:30-7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13

Corrine Jones Park, 36 Marlow Drive Charleston, SC 29403

Enjoy games and activities before the showing of “Enchanted” at dark (approximately 5:20 p.m). Food truck Semilla will have food and drinks available for purchase. Rated PG, “Enchanted” is the story of a princess who is dispatched from her fairy-tale realm and resurfaces in modern-day Manhattan. She meets a divorced lawyer who takes her in while she awaits the arrival of her Prince Charming.

Admission to Movie Night in the Park is free. Leashed pets are allowed.

MAGNOLIA MUSIC SERIES

Head to Magnolia Park and Community Garden in West Ashley for a laid-back evening of music and food while connecting with your neighbors. Magnolia Music Series is 6-8 p.m. on Thursdays. Coming up March 19, enjoy upbeat pop-rock music by Matt Mackelcan Duo and food from Area 51 and Street Bird. On April 16, Sweet Sweet will perform Americana folk music while Lola’s Lumpia and Pita Stroller serve the food.

In the fall, enjoy music by bluegrass band Dallas Baker & Friends on Sept. 17. Food trucks Jonny Poppers and Greekin’ Out will serve the food. The last event in the 2020 series is set for Oct. 15. Americana band If Birds Could Fly will perform, and Semilla will be serving food.

MIX will set up a bar with beer and wine available for purchase. Admission to the Magnolia Music Series is free. Leashed pets are allowed.

SUNDAY BRUNCH IN HAMPTON PARK

Bring blankets and chairs to the Rose Pavilion at Hampton Park for a Sunday funday with live music, food trucks and drinks. The Sunday Brunch in Hampton Park series is back with four events in 2020. Events are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Rose Pavilion, 30 Mary Murray Drive in Charleston. Admission is $10; $15 at the door (kids under 12 are free). Food, beer and wine will be available for purchase.

On March 22, enjoy music by Americana band Sideshow Americans and food from Gorditas Locas, Pita Stroller and Street Bird. On April 26, Guilt Ridden Troubadour will bring their Americana and rock sounds to Hampton Park while Lola’s Lumpia, Area 51, Bits-N-Bytes provide the brunch options. For the May 17 event, Kickin’ Chicken, Johnny Poppers and Holy Rolly Charleston will have food available for purchase.

For the fall Sunday Brunch series, pop-punk band City Lights will perform on Sept. 20. Food trucks will be Brunch Holiday, Bits-N-Bytes, Braised in the South. On Oct. 25, Spunky Spuds, Semilla and Roti Rolls will be serving up brunch bites. On the final event of the 2020 series on Nov. 15, Semilla will have food available for purchase.

All proceeds from this event support the Conservancy’s work renovating and beautifying public parks and green spaces around the City of Charleston. For more than 10 years, the Conservancy — through public-private partnerships — has had a hand in renovating and beautifying more than 20 parks in the City of Charleston. Notable projects include the complete renovation of Colonial Lake, the renovation of the Rose Pavilion at Hampton Park as well as Allan Park, Wragg Square, McMahon Playground at Hampton Park, Magnolia Park and Community Garden, Marion Square, and Medway Park and Community Garden.
