Charleston Wine + Food Wraps Up Festival Day Two

Charleston Wine + Food on Thursday wrapped up the second day of the 15th installment of the festival. Despite the rain, Charleston Wine + Food’s upbeat energy remained in all of Thursday’s events.

Here are some of the highlights from day two:

Winederlust – Guests enjoyed a wide array of fine wines and an incredible view on the Kiawah River. Supported by Fine Cooking Magazine, this event featured live-fire cooking from local and national talent serving up the perfect surf and turf pairings to satiate every wine drinker’s palate.

Back at Bowen’s – Bowen’s Island provided the perfect backdrop for sipping Charleston Mix Bloody Marys and shucking Roddy Rocks Oysters from The Darling Oyster Bar. The highlight of the afternoon was Salthouse Catering’s whole grilled snowy grouper tacos, stuffed with collard greens and boiled peanuts.

Cooking with Conviction – Some of the South’s most influential women shared a lifetime’s worth of triumph, grit, and grace over fried chicken and lima beans at Bertha’s Kitchen. Ashley Christensen, Kia Damon, and Sharon Grant Coakley discussed how cooking in the south has both shaped and challenged their success in defining a new generation of southern chefs.

Wine 180° With Eric Asimov – Wine & Company hosted Eric Asimov, Wine Critic of The New York Times, for a beverage workshop to change and challenge preconceived notions about fine wines and where they come from.

Soul Stroll – Guests toured Charleston soul food restaurants including Martha Lou’s Kitchen, Nana’s Seafood & Soul and Hannibal’s Kitchen. The faces behind these classic restaurants shared their stories and reflected on Charleston’s culinary heritage over soul food favorites.

CHSWFF Academy – This throwback celebration featured reimagined bites and sips reminiscent of high school featuring a Char Siu Pork Belly Sloppy Joe from Jessica Jessica Shillato of Spotted Salamander Cafe, Caviar Tater Tots from Dan Jacobs + Dan Van Rite of Dan Dan, and more. Guests enjoyed live music from The Spazmatics and the College of Charleston Pep Band as they danced the night away in Memminger Auditorium.

Night Bazaar – The international multi-night market made its debut last night at Holy City Brewing. The event showcased international cuisine from chicken shawarma tacos from Jamie Daskalis of Johnnie D’s Waffles and Benedicts to smoked Cuban Lechon Asado from Matthew Deaton of Foode. The event returns tonight + Saturday night.
