The Gibbes Museum of Art Announces New Visiting Artists

The Gibbes Museum of Art announced two Charleston-based artists as the next artists in residence, as part of the Visiting Artist Series. Andrea Hazel and Gina Iacovelli will be working in the studio at the Gibbes from March 2nd to April 12th. The Visiting Artist Series is a program that highlights artists from South Carolina whose work contributes to a new understanding of art in the South by providing them with a workspace and platform to showcase their art.
“The Visiting Artist Series is a program we’re very proud to offer at the Gibbes,” Angela Mack, executive director of the Gibbes Museum of Art, said. “We believe that art should be accessible to all, and we take pride in helping pave the path for artists to display their work in a museum.”
Andrea Hazel is a Charleston-based painter specializing in watercolors. Her latest series, How it Was…Charleston in 1963, depicts scenes of homes and communities that have been demolished and displaced in the wake of Charleston’s rapid growth and development. Hazel will hold public studio hours on Mondays and Wednesdays 11 am to 2 pm, and on Fridays 11 am to 1 pm and 2:15 pm to 4:15 pm. For more information, click here.
Local artisan Gina Iacovelli reintroduces tangible keepsakes through her bespoke jewelry line, Mementos Entwined. Inspired by sentimental and mourning jewelry of the 18th and 19th centuries, Iacovelli studies the lost art of table braiding hair into jewelry. Her designs are intended to preserve a physical piece of life and the memories associated with it. Iacovelli will hold public studio hours on Mondays 12 pm to 2 pm, Fridays 2 pm to 6 pm and Saturdays 10 am to 2 pm. For more information, click here.
The Gibbes will host an end of residency reception Wednesday, April 8th from 6 pm to 7:30 pm.
The Gibbes is now accepting submissions for the 2020 Visiting Artist Series. Artists who currently live in South Carolina can apply for a six-week session with a proposal introducing their current studio practice, artwork content and type of project they would like to accomplish through a residency at the Gibbes Museum of Art.
