New Study Says Charleston Families are Smaller than U.S. Average
A new report by Lattice Publishing looked at the metropolitan areas with the largest families in America and found that Charleston households are smaller than the U.S. average. Holy City families with kids have an average of 1.76 children per household, which is smaller than the national average of 1.85.
To find which metropolitan areas have the largest families, researchers at Lattice Publishing analyzed the latest data from the U.S. Census Bureau. Its researchers calculated the average number of children under 18 in households with children under 18 and the percentage of households with children under 18. In addition, the researchers looked at the difference in median household income between households with children under 18 and all households. To improve relevance, metropolitan areas were grouped into cohorts based on population size: large metros (1,000,000 residents or more), midsize metros (350,000-999,999 residents), and small metros (less than 350,000 residents).
The analysis found that Charleston households with children have an average of 1.76 children per household, which is less than the national average of 1.85.
- Average number of children in Charleston households w/ children: 1.76
- Percentage of households w/ children: 22.2%
- Median household income (households w/ children): $75,242
- Median household income (all households): $60,700
For reference, here are the statistics for the entire United States:
- Average number of children in households w/ children: 1.85

- Median household income (households w/ children): $73,956
