Press Release

The Conservation Voters of South Carolina (CVSC) is partnering with organizations from across the state to celebrate Earth Day’s 50th anniversary during the coronavirus pandemic by holding a series of events you can participate in from home.

Though the COVID-19 crisis has changed the way we live our day-to-day lives, it will not stop us from celebrating Earth Day this year. Even in a pandemic, South Carolinians continue to care about protecting our land, air, and water from the impacts of climate change. Rather than shutting down, CVSC has developed a series of digital events that will be mobilized across South Carolina for us all to take action.

“As we celebrate Earth Day this year, the team at CVSC is committed to bringing our community together in new and different ways to protect the South Carolina we love, even if we can’t be with you in person,” said CVSC Deputy Director Rebecca Haynes. “Whether you can join us this week for a digital event, or simply take the time to enjoy nature, we hope you’ll join us in celebrating the 50th anniversary of Earth Day.”

The first event will happen Tuesday, April 21, 2020 at 12:30 pm. CVSC, Citizens Climate Lobby, and the Environment Defense Fund will host a Climate and Solar Energy 101 webinar. The informative discussion will focus on climate change impacts in South Carolina and the importance of transitioning to a clean energy economy. The event hosts will also share knowledge about solar energy, providing an opportunity to ask questions from experts in the government and business sectors. The webinar will be hosted via Zoom and registration is required. Click here to RSVP.

On Wednesday, April 22, 2020 at 7 pm, Earth Day South Carolina will host a discussion panel with Jim Gandy of WLTX, Rev. Leo Woodberry of New Alpha Community Development Corporation, and Kirstin Dow from the University of South Carolina. The discussion will cover topics such as strategies to fight the climate crisis, sustainable land, water use and environmental justice. Email EarthDaySC@gmail.com for more information or click here to RSVP.

The final event will be Thursday, April 23, 2020 from 6-7 pm, CVSC will hold a virtual film screening and conversation on the documentary Clinging to Coal: West Virginia’s fight over green jobs (watch below). Click here to RSVP for the webinar via Zoom.
