Lowcountry Activists Organizing “#CHS #Earthrising” 2020
Press Release
Lowcountry activists are organizing “#CHS #Earthrising.” Fifty years ago, the Lowcountry celebrated the first Earth Day and the South Carolina Tricentennial. This week, we remember that time of hope and participate in a COVID-19 constrained global Earth Day event by joining the #Earthrising, which begins locally on Earth Day, Wednesday, April 22 at 9:50 am.
“#CHS #Earthrising” continues until Right to Ride Day on May 4th which remembers Mary Bowers, the Charleston woman who won the right of all people, regardless of race, to ride Charleston’s horse drawn streetcars in 1867. May 4th is also the 50th Anniversary of the Kent State shootings, when a major, socially-distanced social justice action is planned.
The effort will launch with a zoom planning meeting on Monday, April 20th at 8 pm. You can join the Zoom Meeting at https://us02web.zoom.us/j/
“#CHS #Earthrising” has a schedule of events which already includes a salute to Transit Drivers, a release of a new song and music video by Sharon Robles, a day of events honoring fallen workers, art events, a demand to meet with Senators Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott on possible federal infrastructure funding for transit, affordable housing, and other human needs.
