Press Release

In response to the outbreak of COVID-19 and the consequent school closures, Able South Carolina has partnered with the SC Department of Education to provide virtual programming for students with disabilities across the state.

Students with any type of disability—including physical, intellectual and psychiatric disabilities—in South Carolina can join these free, online classes, which cater to students grades k-12. Topics include time management, fact-checking news, yoga and mindfulness, goal-setting and more.

“We are grateful to have the support of the Department of Education during this time of crisis, when students with disabilities need us the most,” said Kimberly Tissot, executive director of Able SC. “Coping with isolation and online learning is a challenge for everyone, but we are here to get students through it.”

Some of the virtual programs are self-paced, while others are live classes that students join with their peers online.

“We all need a bit of community right now,” said Paige Maxwell, director of youth transition programs at Able SC. “And that’s what Able SC is—one big community.”

These free, online programs are available to all youth with disabilities in South Carolina. More information and registration is available through their website at www.able-sc.org/virtual-youth-support-services.
