With 20+ years of research and conservation experience, Mary Alice Monroe’s “beach house” novels, set in South Carolina’s Lowcountry, grapple with threats to the environment and indigenous species as well as translate environmental science to relatable human experiences. Monroe’s books have featured brown pelicans, along with the collapse of the shorebird population to bottlenose dolphins and migration of monarch butterflies. Her latest novel, On Ocean Boulevard, delves into the endangerment of loggerhead sea turtles during nesting season against the backdrop of the Rutledge family forging new beginnings.
Monroe is a Isle of Palms resident.
