Emergency Meals-to-You program to provide food to CCSD students in rural areas
Charleston County School District’s (CCSD) Department of Nutrition Services yesterday announced “Emergency Meals-to-You,” a new program that will deliver meals directly to the homes of students.
The initiative, which is a partnership between CCSD, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and Baylor University, provides these meals at no cost to the families.
Families with students enrolled at the following schools are eligible to participate in the program:
- Angel Oak Elementary
- Baptist Hill Middle High
- E.B. Ellington Elementary
- Edith L. Frierson Elementary
- Haut Gap Middle
- Jane Edwards Elementary
- Minnie Hughes Elementary
- Mt. Zion Elementary
- St. James-Santee Elementary-Middle
- St. John’s High
As long as at least one child in the household attends one of the ten schools listed, every child in that household is eligible to receive these meals. If a family registers for the “Emergency Meals-to-You” program, this benefit will not affect any other existing benefit the family is receiving.
The district and the schools are notifying parents and guardians about the program this week and providing them with the steps to register for the service. The enrollment period started on Monday and will last until Sunday, May 10, 2020.
Once a family signs up, an “Emergency Meals-to-You” box will be shipped directly to their door every other week for every child (ages 1-18) in their household. Each box will include 10 breakfasts and 10 lunches, the equivalent of what they would receive at school for two weeks.
“We are proud to say that we served 102,648 meals last week and also started providing weekend meals for our families,” Kerrie Hollifield, the district’s registered dietitian, said. “However, we know that there are still families we need to reach, and this partnership allows us to do that. These times may be uncertain, but what should never be uncertain is if a child is going to be fed that day. We will continue our outreach efforts to reach more and more families every day and continue to make students the heart of our work.”
All of the items in the “Emergency Meals-to-You” box are shelf-stable, which means they will not expire anytime soon and do not have to be immediately refrigerated.
The partnership is set to last through June 30, 2020.
