The Green Heart Project Announces Harvest Dinner To-Go

The Green Heart Project, a local nonprofit providing Farm to School education at schools throughout Charleston, invites the community to join its 10th Anniversary Harvest Dinner on Thursday, May 21st with meal pick-up available from 6 pm to 8 pm at Mitchell Elementary School, 2 Perry St, in downtown Charleston. 

This year’s Harvest Dinner, presented by Limehouse Produce, will be different than in years past. In order to practice COVID-19 safety, the BBQ dinner will be offered through curbside pickup. Green Heart staff will be wearing masks and gloves, and practicing social distancing during the distribution of food.

The Harvest Dinner is a celebration of healthy food, education, and community, and is an opportunity to celebrate all of the hard work that Green Heart students put into their gardens during the school year. As usual, the dinner will feature a BBQ plate with garden-fresh sides prepared by local chefs. In addition, all Green Heart students and families will receive a produce bag of fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables.

“We have been supporting the Harvest Dinner and The Green Heart Project for the past 10 years,” Andrea Limehouse, owner of Limehouse Produce, said. “It is wonderful to see the next generation of students in our community learning how to grow, prepare, and eat healthy food.”

“While we can’t gather in person this year, we are thrilled to still have an opportunity to feed people, to celebrate our students, volunteers, and partners, and to be supported by community members from around the city,” Green Heart Project Executive Director, Jesse Blom, said. “We are thrilled to celebrate the past 10 years of Green Heart, and we are excitedly looking forward to the next 10 years!”

Tickets to the event are $20 for adults, $10 for students, and $1 for children under 12, and must be purchased in advance. Ticket sales benefit The Green Heart Project’s Farm to School programs. In the spirit of cultivating community, there is also an option to “pay it forward” by purchasing a meal for a Green Heart student or their family members, who eat for free.

The day of the event, Green Heart will be streaming live content on its Facebook page between 6 pm to 7:30 pm, celebrating 10 years of students, volunteers, and partners learning together. Content will include: live music, cooking demos, a tour of the Mitchell Elementary gardens, reflections from present and past Green Heart participants, and a sneak peek of the new Urban Farm at Enston Home, currently under construction.
