Native Son, the collaboration between local hip hop artist Benny Starr and Charleston-based soul singer and musician Rodrick Cliche, on Friday (Juneteeth) debuted a concert film called “Restoration.” The video will stream again on both Benny Starr’s YouTube Channel and The Acres of Ancestry Facebook Page at 6 pm on Sunday, June 21st.

The film was released in collaboration with the Acres of Ancestry Initiative/Black Agrarian Fund and, according to Starr, “explores southern stories of the land, live musical performances, as well as ongoing struggles for Land Justice in this country.”

In an e-mail to fans, Starr said, “Over the decades, numerous Black-led nonprofit institutions have attempted to address the steady erosion of the Black agricultural landbase. Their efforts have been unsustainable due to perpetual over-reliance on governmental and philanthropic support. The Acres of Ancestry Initiative/Black Agrarian Fund is our response to the nonprofit scarcity complex. The Acres of Ancestry Initiative/Black Agrarian Fund is a self-sustaining ecosystem to preserve our ancestors’ value paradigm anchored in collective land tenure, spirit-culture reclamation, and ecological harmony.” You can learn more about the organization here.
