Press Release

Charleston County’s Public Works Department will launch a 60-day online public meeting Wednesday, July 1, 2020 regarding intersection improvements to Fort Johnson Road at Secessionville Road.

Citizens can find the online meeting at https://roads.charlestoncounty.org/projects/james-island/johnson-secession-meeting.php. Once there, attendees will have the opportunity to review information about the history of this intersection, look at the recommended preferred alternative, and provide the project team with feedback to help shape the future of the project. Staff originally planned to hold an in-person meeting, but due to the ongoing COVID-19 crises, the Public Work’s department decided to present the recommended alternative in an online format.

The project team will accept comments until August 31. Citizens can submit comments via the online meeting. If citizens need a hard copy of the information presented at the online meeting, or have additional questions, please contact Public Works – Transportation at (843) 202-6137.

The primary goal of this project is to increase safety for all modes of transportation while improving traffic flow. Charleston County, the City of Charleston, the Town of James Island, and the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) have made improving this intersection a priority because of the 40 accidents that have occurred over a five-year period.
