Berkeley County Library System (BCLS) has extended its deadline to August 12th for teens ages 12 -17 to a Virtual Field Trip to explore the history and dyeing techniques of indigo.

The virtual field trip is led by Kristin Threet, education coordinator for Old Santee Canal Park. She was raised in the Lowcountry and earned her bachelor’s degree in history and environmental science from the College of Charleston. She has been with the Old Santee Canal Park since 2017.

“During this field trip, students will encounter the beautiful Old Santee Canal Park without leaving their homes,” Shannon Duffy, Young Adult Librarian for BCLS, said. “Kristin will teach about the history of indigo cultivation in South Carolina, including planting, dying and processing techniques as well as the importance of indigo in our colonial economy.”

“Due to our continued success with this program, we have extended the deadline to August 12th for our visitors to learn and experience the indigo culture,” Threet said. “We are pleased to continue to provide educational content to our visitors with this virtual platform.  We believe the video will bring some creative exploration during these tough times.”
