Charleston HALOS and the Shifa Clinic Team Up To Help Families in Need
The Shifa Clinic has partnered with HALOS to bring food to local kinship families in need. While HALOS works with grandparents and other relatives to keep the children they are raising out of foster care, the Shifa Clinic has stepped in to provide kinship families and more with food and groceries.
“I am proud of this collaborative work to reach those in need,” Dr. Reshma Khan, founder of Shifa Clinic, said. “Prior to COVID-19, we were serving 270 families a month, now we are serving approximately 350 families a week.”
Dr. Khan founded Shifa Clinic in 2012 and it has now grown into a full-time clinic with primary care, OBGYN services, pediatrics, mental health, hunger prevention programs, and more.
“The majority of kinship families live at or below the poverty line and this partnership has been a critical element of support,” Kim Clifton, Executive Director of HALOS, said. “Kinship families are grandparents, aunts and uncles, and family friends who have taken when their parents cannot care for them safely. Providing them with food through the Shifa Clinic is a key component of meeting the critical needs these families are facing.”
Now, more than ever, kinship families need your help. Many of these families are lower income and can face food insecurity. If you are interested in donating or advocating for HALOS, visit the website at www.charlestonhalos.org and visit the Shifa Clinic’s website at shifaclinics.com.
