on

Bread + Butter, a nonprofit connecting Charleston’s hospitality industry with the community at large through staffing and service initiatives, this week announced TOAST (Teaching Others a Skill or Technique). A series of online cooking lessons, TOAST will kick off Tuesday, September 1st at 6:30 pm. Each class will focus on a specific culinary skill or technique based on Bread + Butter’s class curriculum, led by a chef expert on the topic.

The first class in the series will explore knife skills, led by Chef Lauren Furey, a prominent personal chef in Charleston. Lauren offers private dining experiences, cooking classes, and kitchen-to-table meals to both Charleston residents and visitors to the city looking for a fun evening in. Xan McLaughlin, longtime bartender and Operating Partner at The Park Cafe will also lead attendees through a cocktail class to pair with the meal, including a look at various garnish cuts.

Attendees will learn how to correctly handle a knife, explore a number of different cutting techniques, and make a salad incorporating local greens, tossed with a Vidalia honey dressing, local fruits and vegetables, cornbread breadcrumbs with Parmesan and fresh herbs and candied bacon. Attendees will receive an email outlining ingredients and equipment needed in advance of the class.

Each class is donation based (with a suggested donation of $20) and open to the public. These virtual cooking classes will also be passed on to Bread + Butter culinary students who cannot access in-person culinary education during the pandemic.

To join the first September 1st class, register for a ticket at https://breadandbutterchs.org/events.
