Press Release

Businessman Sam Skardon, the Democratic nominee for Senate District 41 (Charleston and Dorchester counties) called on incumbent Senator Sandy Senn and members of the South Carolina State Senate to address COVID-19 safety, voting access, and public education during the September legislative session in Columbia.

“Today the State Senate returns to Columbia for a special session and to consider a nearly $1 billion budget surplus and address the urgent needs of our state amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic,” said Skardon. “For too long our state has lacked bold leadership on the issues that matter most. The Senate must put the safety and well-being of South Carolinians first, and make progress on each of the following crucial priorities:”

  • COVID-19 Safety: Pass a state-wide mask mandate and expand testing so every person that wants or needs a test can get one immediately and receive results quickly. Expand Medicaid so the tens of thousands of South Carolinians losing their jobs amid a public health crisis have access to affordable healthcare.

  • Voting Access: Make our elections safe, accessible and secure by renewing emergency voting legislation, ensuring all polling locations are open and are fully staffed, and permanently removing barriers to absentee and early voting.

  • Public Education: Implement outcomes-based education reforms, including universal Pre-K and teacher pay raises, and address the obvious disparities in our schools. Setup a process to engage parents and teachers throughout the school year to provide safe, flexible, and effective learning environments during the COVID Pandemic.
