Chamber Music Charleston Announces 2020-21 Concert Season

Chamber Music Charleston (CMC) is pleased to report that the previously announced schedule of the 2020-2021 concert season will take place as initially set forth, but with minor adjustments to ensure everyone’s safety. Towards that end, we are naming the upcoming season: “CMC At Home: The Concert Experience Reimagined,” with the September through December 2020 performances moving to an online and digital platform.

From the comfort of one’s own home, viewers will enjoy masterwork of the chamber music repertoire performed by CMC’s local professional musicians alongside exceptional guest artists. In addition to music of the highest artistic caliber, the viewer will also enjoy all the special elements that make CMC concerts such a unique experience.  From entertaining and informative introductions to the pieces and insights from the musicians to glimpses into the beautiful historic homes and venues of Charleston, each online experience will be a truly unique musical event.

Performances of each program will be videotaped in its entirety and available for ticket holders to view online for up to two weeks after the initial stream.

CMC hopes to return to live, in-person concerts in January 2021, but will reassess the ability to do so in December.

CMC At Home Schedule:

• Downtown House Concert.  Clarinetist Charles Messersmith, bassoonist Sandra Nikolajevs and pianist Chee Hang See perform Ravel’s “Piece en forme de Habanera,” Brahms Clarinet Sonata No. 2 and Beethoven’s Piano Trio in B-flat Major, Op. 11.  Streaming Monday, September 14, 2020 at 7pm live from SC Society Hall; available on demand until September 26, 2020.

• Beethoven: His Women and Music” Chamber Music Charleston joins forces with Actors’ Theatre of South Carolina to present a riveting look into Ludwig van Beethoven’s life and his mercurial relationships with women.  Musicians will Beethoven’s masterful Archduke Piano Trio intermingled with reflections by the enigmatic composer, portrayed by veteran Broadway, television and film actor, Clarence Felder.  Streaming Premiere Sunday, September 27, 2020 at 7pm; available on demand until October 10, 2020.

• Guest violinist Amy Schwartz Moretti join musicians of CMC at Sottile Theatre Chevalier de Saint-Georges Violin Duo No. 3 in A Major and Beethoven’s String Quartet Op. 50 No. 2.  Streaming Tuesday, October 13, 2020 at 7:30pm live from Sottile Theatre; available on demand until October 26, 2020.

• Guest Pianist Phillip Bush join the winds of CMC at the Dock Street Theatre for Saint-Saens Tarentella, Op. 6, Poulenc’s Trio for Piano, Oboe and Bassoon and Reinecke’s Trio for Oboe, Horn and Piano.  Streaming Tuesday, November 10, 2020 at 7:30pm live from Sottile Theatre; available on demand until November 14, 2020.

• Downtown House Concert.  Violinists Frances Hsieh and Lydia Chernicoff, violist Ben Weiss and cellist Timothy O’Malley perform Haydn’s String Quartet Op. 64 No. 5, “The Lark,” and Debussy’s String Quartet in g minor, Op. 10.  Streaming Monday, November 16 2020 at 7pm live from SC Society Hall; available on demand until November 28, 2020.

•  “A Classical Christmas” This holiday inspired program opens with performances of Corelli’s Christmas Concerto, Holst’s In The Bleak Midwinter and Felicien David’s “Soirees d’Hiver”.  Streaming Sunday, December 6, 2020 at 7pm live from SC Society Hall; available on demand until December 19, 2020.
