SC Dem Party Chair Calls on SC General Assembly to Enact Election Security and Voting Access Changes

The following is a press release from the South Carolina Democratic Party

In a final effort to protect democracy and ensure an open and fair election this November, SCDP Chair Trav Robertson, Jr., today, announced that he will ask The Carter Center and National Democratic Institute to conduct election oversight of South Carolina’s elections in November if the South Carolina General Assembly does not enact changes taking into account serious concerns about election security and voting access.

“As evidenced by the Governor’s appointed SC State Election Commission’s decision to release a sample ballot excluding Joe Biden five days prior to the filing deadline and the Legislature’s failure to ensure the constitutionally mandated open and fair election process, it is apparent that Republicans, who control all aspects of South Carolina’s election process do not want open and fair elections.” says Robertson.

“South Carolina voters deserve an election that is safe during COVID and completely free of fraud. We must ensure voters are not being intentionally disenfranchised by bad actors distributing misinformation, or intimidated at polling places. And we certainly cannot ask them to stand in long lines during a pandemic, when the SC House has the power to expand absentee access.”

Since 1983 the non profit, non partisan, non governmental NDI has worked around the world to safeguard elections and promote government accountability. The non partisan Atlanta- based, Carter Center has observed over 110 elections globally since 1989.
