Charleston County Public Works Launches 30-Day Community Feedback Period for the U.S. 17 Corridor Congestion Improvement Study

This week, Charleston County’s Public Works Department launched a 30-day community feedback period on the U.S. 17 Corridor Congestion Study. This area includes U.S. 17 from Coming Street in downtown Charleston to Avondale Avenue in West Ashley.

The study looks at ways to improve the corridor’s intersections, travel demand management, bike/pedestrian facilities, transit, and capacity. Through the project website, citizens can navigate menus describing different possible improvements to the corridor, as well as take surveys, and provide comments. Staff originally planned to hold an in-person meeting, but due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Public Work’s department has decided to present this information in an online format.

Located in the City of Charleston, the U.S. 17 Corridor Congestion Improvement Study focuses on the three-mile stretch of U.S. 17 from West Ashley’s Avondale Avenue, over the Ashley River, and to the end of the Septima P. Clark/Crosstown Expressway at Coming Street. Charleston County looks to develop a master plan for short-term and long-term congestion improvements that addresses current and future traffic along this heavily traveled corridor.
