Press Release

AIA Charleston is excited to announce a Design Ideas Competition in response to a desire by the City of Charleston to create a Parklet Program. The competition seeks ideas for an outdoor space with purpose, that promotes civic advocacy in design while instigating a socially cooperative and equitable design process that serves Charleston’s diverse population.

A Parklet (park·let) is a small seating area or green space created as a public amenity on or alongside a sidewalk, especially in a former roadside parking space.

Collaborative efforts with The City of Charleston Civic Design Center and the Clemson Architecture  Center in Charleston are underway to finalize details. A Competition Brief will be published by November. Registration will then begin immediately and entries will be due in December. The Jury will deliberate and  announce awards in January of 2021.

Participation is open to the General Public. Architects, Landscape Architects, Designers, Planners and  Students highly encouraged. AIA Membership NOT required. Complete details will be released online at  www.aiacharleston.org. Notifications and updates will be announced on this site and distributed regularly  through social media.

Eddie Bello, AIA, a Principal of Bello Garris Architects, will Chair a diverse Jury Committee of  professional and academic individuals. A lifelong Charlestonian, Eddie served as the City Architect from  2000-2009 and has an extensive knowledge of the city as an organization and as a place.
