Destiny Community Cafe Introduces Gullah Geechee inspired Garden

Ragina Saunders is on a mission to end hunger, which prominently plagues her local communities. At Destiny Community Cafe, part of the international “pay what you can” network, her goal is to provide soulful, high-quality meals from locally-sourced entities to feed both paying customers and those in need. Destiny Community Café is South Carolina’s 1st Pay-What-You-Can establishment. 

With the importance of food justice so apparent, Regina has taken on a new initiative, Destiny Community Cafe’s Garden. A large unused planter in front of the cafe, which is in a strip mall, is being converted to a Gullah Geechee inspired garden. It will provide herbs and produce for the cafe, as well as offer a space for much broader impacts like educational opportunities to share the joy of growing your own food with children and adults that typically don’t have access to gardens and green spaces, exploring Gullah roots through heritage plantings guided by Gullah Geechee farmers and herbalists, garden therapy as an emotional support, culinary classes, and more.

The “Blessing of Da’ Gullah Garden” is scheduled for Sunday, October 18th from 1 pm to 3 pm at 5060 Dorchester Road. The event will include light refreshments including a healthy twist on the nostalgic frozen “chilly bears” made from nutritious and delicious green smoothies and Chef Tianna’s vegetarian specialties. There will also be plant giveaways donated in part by Sea Island Savory Herbs. This is a socially distanced, outdoor event and masks are required.
